Last month, my three-year-old grandson joined our neighborhood youth soccer league. I wanted him involved in some type of sport so he could burn off some energy and learn how to play with others. So far---so good.
But what I have come to discover is, his coach---"Coach John"---is a proud member of the Tea Party. You know them---the gun toting, we don't like anything President Obama does, Sarah Palin supporters who are stockpiling weapons and daring anyone to take away their second amendment rights.
How did I find this out? When I created a Facebook Fan Page for the soccer group the other day, I invited everyone involved to become a fan. He did. I then went to his profile page and read his comments and also saw the people he was connected too--very scary.
This is certainly not someone I would want to be an influence in my grandson's life but so far, he hasn't been anything but decent and helpful to the kids, who are mostly African American.
I'm writing this post as an advisory to parents and grandparents. With social media being as prevelant as it is today, you can find out about anybody with a little research. Do your homework and know who your children are associating with---even if it's for the little activities like soccer.

Last I checked, political views are part of the freedom of bein an American. To say that someone of opposin (sorry this letter doesn't work on my computer) views to you isn't fit to interact with your Jarod seems a bit extreme to me. Thouh you don't like the tea parties, or Sarah Palin, you are a Christian, and on that point you do share common 'round. I respect your political stance, as much as I oppose it. Do you think I wouldn't be fit to coach Jarod and his friends, of any race? I am a tea party, 'un totin', Sarah Palin, anti-Obama person, too. Just sayin'

I always try to find out who a person is before making a commitment, while this isn't always possible, you're right, social media affords us the opportunity to check out people -- it's our responsibility to do our OWN homework! ;-) Great post!

I believe anyone with extremist views should never be allowed to be an influence around children. It is dangerous and may explain some of the radical behavior we see in some children.
The fact that Coach John hasn't tried to impose his views on the group does make me appreciate him as a human being but now that I know this about him, I will watch him more closely--as I suspect he would watch Nate or me if we were members of the Black Panthers. I bet he would definitely pull his daughter off the team.
I see we are going to respectfully agree to disagree on this subject--which is OK--because your heart says something else to me.
